It is one of the few cities in Russia to be larger than the capital or the administrative center of its federal subject in terms of population, economic activity, and tourist traffic. Population: 348,643 (2016); 306,675 (2010 Census);[3]285,027 (2002 Census);[5]247,823 (1989 Census).[6]
